Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Brian Bowman presented Teemu Selanne with the Key to the City of Winnipeg today recognizing his achievements on and off the ice in Winnipeg, his dedication to the sport of hockey, and the legacy he left in the hearts of Winnipeg hockey fans.
“Hockey is a part of life in Winnipeg and there are certain moments in time that bond us together as Winnipeggers,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Teemu Selanne’s NHL goal-scoring record during his historic rookie season is one of those moments that brought many of us together and was unforgettable. Known as much for his personality off the ice as he was for his play on the ice, Teemu is truly an ambassador for the game of hockey and a hero to Winnipeg Jets fans.”
The Key to the City is Winnipeg’s highest honour, and recognizes the significant contributions of dignitaries visiting the city. Teemu captured Winnipeggers’ hearts in 1992 when he exploded into the NHL scoring 76 goals and recording 132 points in 84 games.
“Teemu’s accomplishments on and off the ice are entrenched in Winnipeg hockey folklore, and I am thrilled to be able to honour such an iconic figure during the Heritage Classic weekend,” said Mayor Bowman. “I want to thank True North Sports Entertainment for the work they have done preparing for this weekend’s festivities and for allowing us to present Teemu with this award at the MTS Centre.”
