Winnipeg, MB - At 4:30 a.m. this morning, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded to a report of a fire in the upper level of a wood framed two storey, four-unit residential complex in the four hundred block of Manitoba Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, firefighters determined the fire was in a second floor suite and proceeded to evacuate tenants from the block’s three other suites.
Crews advanced an attack line to the involved suite and encountered a fire in the kitchen area. During an initial search, one adult male was found in an adjacent room and carried downstairs to paramedics. Additional searches revealed no further victims in the involved suite.
Firefighters were able to control the fire quickly and confine it to the suite it started in. Water damage occurred to the suite below the involved suite which resulted in the tenants being relocated to alternate accommodations.
The patient was treated on scene by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition.
Cause of the fire is under investigation.
“Without the excellent work of our firefighters and paramedics, the outcome of this fire could have been tragic,” said Deputy Chief, Tom Wallace, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “I would like to thank our firefighters and paramedics for their excellent work this morning. This fire event is a good reminder for the public to check their smoke alarms regularly and to also plan and practice a home escape plan.”

UPDATE: Cause of this fire has been determined as accidental and the fire started in the kitchen. The public is reminded to stay in the kitchen when preparing food using a stove. If you leave the kitchen for even a short time, turn off the stove.
