All cars upright, no leaks

Winnipeg, MB - At 5:08 p.m. this afternoon, nine cars on a Canadian National (CN) Railway train were involved in a minor derailment behind the Federal Building, which is at the southeast corner of Portage Avenue and Main Street. There were no injuries caused by the derailment, and there is no damage to other property reported at this time. All derailed cars remained upright throughout the incident, did not leak, and though classified to carry dangerous goods, were empty. Train cars on the overpass portion of the track (over William Stephenson Way) were not derailed.

The Winnipeg Police Service, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, and the City’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator arrived on-scene beginning at 5:12 p.m. to protect public safety; they were clear from the scene by approximately 5:40 p.m. William Stephenson Way and Pioneer Avenue were closed for a short time in the interest of public safety, but have since reopened.

Members of the Winnipeg Public Service have remained in contact with CN officials throughout the incident.
