We are offering free Instructor Guard training to qualified applicants.

Are you an experienced swimmer who will be at least 16 years old on March 31, 2023? If you’ve considered becoming a lifeguard/swim instructor with us, now is the perfect time — we’re offering all the training you need for free.

The new Instructor Guard Training Program provides the opportunity for 60 successful applicants to receive the six courses required to apply as an Instructor Guard with us. All course materials will also be included free of charge.

“There’s been a shortage of part-time and full-time Instructor Guards across Canada, and we’ve been impacted by that in Winnipeg,” said Jennifer Sarna, Manager of Recreation Services.

“We wanted to further incentivize candidates by investing financially in their training for the required certification to get as many new applicants in as possible.”

Applicants must have a minimum Grade 10 education, and be able to demonstrate swimming ability at a Canadian Red Cross Level 8 or Lifesaving Society Swimmer 6 level. At the end of the 14-week program, which runs from late December to March, you’ll be invited to apply to work as an Instructor Guard for us.

“Becoming an Instructor Guard with the City is a fantastic employment opportunity for all ages,” said Sarna.

The Instructor Guard Training Program is funded by us and the Canada-Manitoba Job Grant.

Apply online now until December 5, 2022.
