About our Indigenous Youth Strategy
Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak, pronounced Awsh-kay Anish-a-nob-bay Nee-ganee-walk, means “Young Indigenous People Leading” in Anishinaabemowin, also known as Ojibwe. This name is a reminder that youth are the leaders of today as well as tomorrow.
The strategy’s goal is to provide culturally appropriate programs and supports related to employment, education, training, literacy, and recreation. It is guided by the principles of caring, sharing, kindness, and truth.
City Council approved Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak in 2008. Since then, we have worked with City departments and community partners to deliver programs for Indigenous youth.
We launched the scholarship program in 2014 and have awarded scholarships to 111 Indigenous youth, providing $111,000 in tuition support.
