Tip #5: Stoves and fireplace safety
Winnipeg, MB - Holiday spirit is high this time of year, but so can be the risk of home fires. In our #FireFreeHoliday series, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service would like share some helpful tips to help you minimize the risk of a fire in your home and make your holiday season enjoyable and safe.
Stoves and Fireplaces
Using your fireplace or stove is a great holiday tradition, but it’s important to consider the carbon monoxide generated by wood-burning stoves or fireplaces. Some things to keep in mind for safe burning are:
- Burn dry, well-seasoned wood that has been properly split. Green wood emits larger amounts of creosote.
- Burn small, hot fires. A smoldering fire makes more smoke and therefore a larger creosote buildup.
- Never burn garbage or glossy paper, like wrapping paper. Plastic and coloured ink on magazines and wrappers produce harmful chemicals and creosote when burned.
- Never burn treated wood like particle board, plywood, or any other painted wood. This treated wood releases chemicals and can create creosote build-up.
- Always start your fire with newspaper and dry kindling. Never use gasoline, kerosene, charcoal starter or a propane torch - a fire can quickly get out of control when using fuels other than wood. â
And don’t forget, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors make great gifts for those special people on your list
