Nous sommes à l’écoute : Partie 2 du plan proposé pour prolonger le service d’autobus offert en soirée

Winnipeg Transit's proposed plan to expand transit service at night

Winnipeg Transit bus at a stop at night

Council is now considering a plan to expand Transit service later at night.

We developed this plan in response to feedback from passengers who said service ended too early in some areas. If approved by Council, it would go into effect with the spring schedule in April 2026.

The map of areas with late-night services shows current nighttime transit coverage vs. the recommended expansions.

Timing is everything

We heard your concerns with routes ending too early in some areas. But we can’t make immediate changes for a few reasons.

Extending service comes with an annual operating cost. We can't spend more money unless Council provides it in our budget. That's why our plan needs to go to Council before we can add these new service hours.

There are other steps to extending service that also require time. One is writing the bus schedules. Another is hiring new operators and ensuring we have enough buses.

Then we have to wait for a seasonal service change. This is when operators ‘sign-up’ for their shifts. These happen four times a year: in April, June, September, and December.

April is the soonest we can expand service hours on these routes.

Expanded On-Request hours and more coming in December

This week Council approved our plan to expand hours in most On-Request zones when the winter schedule starts.

These changes will start December 14:

  • All zones that currently operate after 7 p.m. will extend service until around 2 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays.
  • On Sundays and holidays, those zones will operate until around 12:45 a.m.
  • Boundaries for Zone 103 will also expand so passengers can take On-Request to Garden City Shopping Centre and Walmart
  • Hours for daytime-only On-Request zones (104 and 110) will not change.

We’ve also rewritten schedules for buses that were regularly late and added capacity where needed. Here are the key details of other changes coming with the winter schedule:

  • Full rewrites of schedules for D12, D13, D16, and F8, with 49 service hours added to these routes on weekdays
  • New trips added to six school-serving routes experiencing capacity issues (442, 557, 649, 678, 694, 885)
  • Schedule shifts to align better with school start times where possible

Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback on our new network so far.
