A better way to park during a residential plow

Snow clearing

We know finding parking during a residential parking ban can be tough for Winnipeggers who would otherwise park overnight on their residential street.

As a quick reminder:

  • Every residential street in Winnipeg is assigned a snow zone letter
    • When a residential parking ban is called, each zone is given a 12-hour timeframe when parking is prohibited
    • Those who would normally park on their street must move their cars elsewhere during this time
  • Finding alternate parking can be tough because of the concurrent winter route parking ban
    • The winter route parking ban is called once enough snow falls to require frequent snow clearing on main routes.
    • It remains in place until spring
    • This ban prohibits parking on designated routes from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. nightly to give crews room to work

We’re happy to tell you you’ll now have more options.

Starting this year, we will suspend the winter route parking ban each time a residential parking ban is on. This means you’ll be able to park overnight on designated winter routes, unless parking is prohibited by other unrelated or temporary signage.

“The purpose of clearing snow and ice from residential streets is to make travel safer and easier for Winnipeggers,” said Michael Cantor, Manager of Streets Maintenance for the City of Winnipeg. “Making things harder while we prepare for these operations is the last thing we want.

“While we can’t make parking problems disappear entirely, one thing we can do is offer a new option to make finding an overnight parking spot a bit easier.”

The first residential parking ban under the new rule starts Sunday, January 14 at 7 p.m.

This year is unique in that the annual winter route parking ban itself is not scheduled to start until Tuesday, January 16, at 2 a.m.

An extended winter route parking ban is in place until Sunday, January 14 at 7 a.m.

Ultimately, this means:

  • Do not park on winter routes between midnight and 7 a.m. tonight (Friday) or tomorrow (Saturday) night.
  • You can park overnight on winter routes Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights (January 14, 15, 16).
  • Come Wednesday night (January 16), there will be no parking on winter routes from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. until further notice.
