Arson and fire prevention

If you see a fire, a crime in progress, or an emergency, call 9-1-1.

A fire set on purpose can cause significant damage and injury or death. You can take steps to protect your home and neighbourhood from set fires. Vacant buildings can also be a target.

Flammable items left outside can be an easy target for arsonists. Properly disposing of flammable items like garbage, furniture, mattresses, yard waste, firewood, and flammable liquids can help ensure they don’t catch fire. You should also keep these items away from your home, garage, or fence.

Follow these tips to stay safe:

  • Only put your garbage and recycling carts and your yard waste out on collection day.

  • Store flammable liquids and items in a safe, secure place.

  • Keep shrubs and trees healthy, trimmed, and watered.

  • Use motion-activated lights to brighten the outside of your home or garage.

  • Keep your inside and outside exits clear with nothing blocking the way out.
