Winnipeggers invited to provide feedback on how to limit combined sewer overflows

Released: September 2, 2015 at 2:25 p.m.
Attend a public meeting September 14 or 15 to learn more about what could be the largest and most expensive infrastructure project in Winnipeg's history

Winnipeg, MB - Public meetings will be held in September to allow Winnipeggers to share their views on potential strategies to control combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The City is required to limit CSOs to meet provincial legislation. Depending on the option selected, controlling CSOs could be the largest and most expensive infrastructure project in Winnipeg's history.

CSOs are temporary sewer discharges to the river during periods of heavy rainfall or snow melt. There are a range of control options being considered. Each would entail significantly different costs and environmental impacts, and would involve different levels of interruption to City services due to construction.

Historically, combined sewer overflows happen about 22 times a year in each sewer district in Winnipeg.
