Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is installing approximately 45 additional pedestrian countdown signals in 2015 to increase safety for pedestrians. Pedestrian countdown signals provide better information to pedestrians by displaying the amount of time left to cross a street. With this information, pedestrians can make more informed decisions about crossing the street and can adjust walking speeds based on the time displayed.
The Public Works Department began installing Pedestrian Countdown Signals in January 2014 on a priority basis following a successful pilot project in 2013. Locations for these signals are selected and prioritized based on a number of factors including: crosswalk distance, intersection complexity, traffic volume, land use, speed limit, proximity to schools or large populations of seniors, and ridership at nearby transit stops.
Over the next few years and subject to available funding, the City will work through the Pedestrian Countdown Signals Implementation Plan in the order listed in the plan. Approximately 45 pedestrian countdown signals from this list will be installed in 2015.
