Winnipeg, MB - Plowing and drainage improvement operations on residential streets continued overnight and this morning, and will continue until Friday at 7:00 p.m.
The focus in this operation is to improve drainage by exposing curb inlets (catch basins) and subsequently improve the driving lane where snow accumulations warrant. Additionally, where possible, the parking lane will be cleared.
To achieve the conditions needed to promote efficient drainage of our streets as spring melt progresses, the snow and ice clearing operation has taken additional time. Once complete, it is anticipated that this operation will help to prevent some of the overland flooding that can result in a quick melt of the accumulated snow and ice on and adjacent to our roadways.
Changing weather conditions expected tonight may impact how quickly this operation is completed. An update will be provided on Friday.
“Our goal is to make streets safer and easier for citizens traveling from home to their destinations,” said Jim Berezowsky, Manager of Streets Maintenance, Public Works Department. “We also want to ensure all the snow and ice accumulated in snow banks has a place to drain efficiently when the weather warms up.”
For those residents that may not receive drainage clearing and driving lane improvements during the planned schedule, those streets will be addressed in the coming days.
A residential parking ban is NOT in effect, but motorists are encouraged to find alternate parking so that both the driving and parking lanes can be cleared.
Public Works is using the Know Your Zone boundaries to provide the public with an awareness of the areas in which the City is providing the service in each of the 12-hour shifts. Citizens are encouraged to confirm their snow zone letter through knowyourzone.winnipeg.ca or by contacting 311.
