Winnipeg, MB - Winnipeg residents are invited to comment on a new draft Water By-law. This new draft Water By-law would replace the existing Water Works By-law No. 504/73, which has been in effect since 1973. The new draft Water By-law, prepared in user-friendly language, strengthens measures to protect the City’s waterworks system and safeguard the high quality of Winnipeg’s drinking water.

Some of the key revisions proposed in the new draft Water By-law are:

  • expanding the types of properties required to install a device that prevents water in a building from entering the City’s drinking water system,
  • increasing restrictions for the use of public and private fire hydrants,
  • adding requirements to ensure water meters are installed using a standardized approach that would improve safety and access, and
  • significantly increasing fines for by-law violations.
