Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service's Fire House Safety Program educates kids on fire safety

Winnipeg, MB - Would your kids know how to escape a burning building? The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is encouraging children and families to learn more about fire safety this summer by participating in the Fire House Safety Program.

“The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is committed to educating children and parents about how best to react in an emergency. The Fire House Safety Program is a great teaching tool for helping kids and parents understand the importance of planning and practicing an escape route in case of fire,” said Chief John Lane, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

Started in 1992, the Fire House Safety Program uses a portable classroom to teach kids about fire and life safety. Children are invited into the Fire Safety House trailer where they learn about fire safety in the kitchen, living room and bedroom, and how to create an escape plan. Children are taught how to minimize the risk of fire, and how to escape if one does happen.

Kids then put their knowledge to the test in the escape simulation. Artificial smoke and a heated door simulate a real fire, and participants evacuate through a window of the trailer. Each tour is between 10 and 15 minutes long, and is intended for children between the ages of 3 and 12.

The Fire House Safety Program trailer, sponsored by Red River Mutual through a partnership with the Firefighters Burn Fund and Office of the Fire Commissioner, is available to attend schools, daycares, block parties, community events, festivals and fairs. The Program is free of charge until Sunday, August 31, 2014, and bookings are first come, first served.

Last year, nearly 19,000 Winnipeg children toured a Fire House trailer.
