At 8:27 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a monitored fire alarm in a high-rise apartment building in the 100 block of Smith Street.
9-1-1 dispatchers initially declared a second alarm because of the potential scale of the incident and dispatched additional units to the scene.
When crews arrived at the scene, they found fire in one of the suites. Firefighters launched an interior fire attack and brought the fire under control at 8:58 p.m. The fire was contained to the suite where it started.
Some occupants evacuated the building while some were able to shelter in place in their suites. No injuries were reported.
After firefighters extinguished the fire and cleared smoke from the building, most residents were able to return to their suites.
Damage estimates are not available. Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by unattended cooking.
To help prevent kitchen fires, residents should:
- Stay in the kitchen while cooking.
- Keep oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, and curtains away from the stovetop.
- Heat oil slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the top with a metal lid. Never use water to put out an oil fire.
