Released: June 19, 2026 at 2:25 p.m.

Mayor Scott Gillingham issued the following statement today regarding the retirement of Jonathan Toews from the NHL:

“No matter the jersey he wore, Jonathan represented Winnipeg with distinction. From his early days skating on local outdoor rinks to captaining one of the most successful teams of his generation, he carried himself with a level of determination that earned respect throughout the hockey world. Jonathan established himself as one of the most accomplished players in hockey, reaching milestones that only a select group of athletes have achieved.  Yet beyond the trophies and accolades, Winnipeggers took pride in the way he conducted himself throughout his career. He never forgot where he came from and remained a source of pride for our city on every stage.

It was a privilege to see Jonathan return home and wear the jersey of our Winnipeg Jets and to celebrate the connection he has always maintained with his fans in this community.

Jonathan Toews leaves the game as a champion, an ambassador for Winnipeg, and a role model for future generations. Winnipeggers are proud of his accomplishments throughout his career and grateful for the way he represented our city on the world stage. He is a future hall of famer whose legacy will endure far beyond the rink.”
