Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two overnight apartment building fires.

Powers Street fire

At 12:58 a.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026, WFPS crews responded to a monitored fire alarm in a 12-storey high-rise apartment building in the 100 block of Powers Street.

Crews arrived to find thick black smoke inside the building. Firefighters located a fire in one of the suites and quickly launched an interior fire attack. They declared the fire under control at 1:30 a.m. and then worked to ventilate smoke.

Many residents had already self-evacuated before crews arrived. Firefighters helped those still inside leave the building. A Winnipeg Transit bus was deployed to the scene to provide shelter for the evacuees.

Paramedics assessed several people at the scene and transported one person to hospital in stable condition.

Most residents were able to return to the suites after firefighters ventilated smoke from the building.

The fire remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not available. Fire damage was primarily contained to the suite where the fire originated. Some adjacent suites sustained water damage.
