Winnipeg, MB – At 3:46 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2026, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a vacant hotel in the 600 block of Main Street.
At the scene, crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the building. Firefighters attacked the fire from outside of the building as it was unsafe to enter. Firefighters used aerial ladders and hose lines to spray water on the fire and protect neighbouring buildings.
Firefighters evacuated the neighbouring shelter as a precaution. Winnipeg Transit responded to provide buses for temporary shelter for evacuees. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team responded to the scene and is working with shelter staff to provide support for those who were evacuated.
No injuries have been reported.
The fire is under investigation. The building has sustained major damage and is a total loss. Crews will continue to work on scene throughout the morning to ensure the fire is extinguished.
Main Street will be closed in both directions between Logan Avenue and Higgins Avenue while crews complete their work on scene. Please avoid the area.
Residents should use caution in the area, as water used to fight the fire will freeze and create slippery conditions. City of Winnipeg crews will be monitoring conditions and applying sand and de-icing agents to roadways and sidewalks as required to improve traction.
