Statement from Mayor Gillingham on Police Charges and Oversight

Mayor Scott Gillingham issued the following statement today:

The charges laid against members of the Winnipeg Police Service are serious and concerning.

Police play a critical role in our community, and public confidence in the service is essential. I support Chief Bowers and the WPS as they work to maintain that trust, and I commend them for the action taken today to address this matter with transparency.

I also support the Chief’s request to the provincial government for a uniform code of conduct for police officers across Manitoba and for a requirement to publicly disclose disciplinary actions. These are important steps to strengthen accountability.
