Released: March 27, 2025 at 12:30 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:41 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a house in the 700 block of Burrows Avenue.

At the scene, crews saw smoke coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire, declaring it under control at 8:27 p.m.

All occupants safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team responded to the scene to provide temporary support to displaced residents. A Winnipeg Transit bus was sent to the scene to provide temporary shelter.

No damage estimates are available. Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental and caused by a candle.

To avoid a fire, follow these tips:

  • Never leave a lit candle unattended.
  • Keep lit candles away from anything that can catch on fire like curtains, decorations, and clothing.
  • Extinguish candles if you leave the room and while you’re sleeping.
  • Don’t put lit candles in a drafty or windy area.
  • Put candles in safe, sturdy candle holders that won’t tip over or catch fire.
  • Supervise children around lit candles.
