Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg’s Public Works Department has received American Public Works Association (APWA) accreditation for the fifth time.

As North American’s governing body for public works management, APWA is responsible for determining guidelines and monitoring compliance with best practices across the continent.

Accreditation is a voluntary process designed to demonstrate continuous practice and process improvement. This designation certifies our practices and processes comply with the recommended management practices identified in APWA’s Public Works Management Practices Model.

“Earning APWA accreditation reflects the professionalism and dedication of Winnipeg’s Public Works team,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “Their work, day in and day out, keeps our city moving and safe. This recognition places Winnipeg among North America’s leaders in public works management, and I’m proud of the team for their achievement.”

Winnipeg is currently the only accredited Canadian municipality. This designation speaks to Public Works’ dedication to improving processes, procedures, and – ultimately – customer service in a variety of areas.

Among the areas evaluated were:

  • Administration (like organization and strategic planning, human resources, and finance)
  • Communication, data management, and information technology
  • Emergency planning and safety
  • Asset management and infrastructure planning
  • Construction, engineering, and traffic management
  • Parks, grounds, insects, and forestry
  • Streets maintenance (street cleaning, snow and ice control,
  • Parking

The new accreditation is in effect until 2029.
