Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to five overnight structure fires

Fires on Edwin Street, Dearborn Street, Westminster Avenue, Kinkora Drive and Polson Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to five structure fires last night.

Edwin Street fire

At 6:56 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2024, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey commercial warehouse.

When crews arrived to the location, they found smoke and flames coming from the building. The fire was quickly brought under control.

Crews completed a search of the building, and no occupants were found. There were no injuries reported.

The fire remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.

Dearborn Street Fire

At 8:13 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 100 block of Dearborn Street.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found the smoke and flames coming from the house, with fire extending to a neighbouring house. Fire crews launched an offensive fire attack, declaring the fire under control at 8:44 p.m.

Occupants from both houses safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was called to help the displaced residents find temporary accommodations.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

Westminster Avenue fire

At 11:54 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2024, WFPS crews were dispatched for reports of a fire in a vacant two-storey house in the 600 block of Westminster Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke and flames coming from the house. Firefighters launched an offensive fire attack, declaring the fire under control at 12:43 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the structure, and no occupants were found. There were no injuries reported.

The fire remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not available. The structure had sustained damage in two previous fires in August 2022 and May 2023.

If residents see someone actively entering a vacant structure, or removing boards from windows or doors, they should report the incident immediately by calling the Winnipeg Police Service at 911.

Anyone who sees that boarded windows or doors have been breached, but did not see someone actively entering or attempting to enter a structure should report the incident to 311.

Kinkora Drive fire

At 1:25 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey house on Kinkora Drive.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found the attached garage engulfed in smoke and flames, with fire extending to the house. Fire crews initially launched a fire attack from the exterior and then transitioned to an interior fire attack once it was safe for them to enter the structure. The fire was declared under control at 2:41 a.m.

All occupants of the house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.

Polson Avenue fire

At 2:41 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024, the WFPS responded to reports of a garage fire in the 500 block of Polson Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found a garage engulfed in flames, with fire extending to a second garage.

Crews launched a fire attack, declaring the fire under control at 3:00 a.m.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
