City of Winnipeg to conduct controlled burns in natural areas

Released: May 19, 2023 at 9:46 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg will be conducting controlled burns in various natural areas between May 19 and June 16, weather conditions permitting. Controlled burns will be conducted in suitable wind conditions with appropriate fire guards in place.

Fire plays an important role in the preservation and restoration of prairies. Lack of fire allows weeds to invade endangered plant communities. Controlled burns have been conducted by the City in Winnipeg's tall grass prairies since 1986.
