Winnipeg, MB – At 7:43 a.m. on Sunday, October 24, 2021 the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a multi-unit commercial building in the 800 block of Main Street.
Once on-scene, crews encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. An offensive attack was initially launched but deteriorating conditions forced the crews to exit the building and transition to a defensive attack. Crews are using two aerial ladders and handlines to extinguish the fire while also protecting neighbouring structures. The WFPS drone is also being used for situational awareness and the detection of hot spots. Crews are expected to remain on scene well into the afternoon.
With the help of Winnipeg Police Service members, crews evacuated occupants from neighbouring units in the building. One firefighter was injured. They were treated by on-scene paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
The building is a complete loss with fire damage and a collapsed roof. Heavy equipment will be brought in to demolish the structure due to the risk of further collapse. A neighbouring church has also suffered smoke and water damage. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Main Street is currently closed in both directions from Jarvis Avenue to Selkirk Avenue. Residents are asked to avoid the area.
