Winnipeg, MB - A motion scheduled to be considered by Executive Policy Committee next week recommends that CentreVenture Development Corporation's mandate be reaffirmed as the City of Winnipeg's lead agency tasked with providing leadership in the planning, development, coordination, and implementation of projects and activities in downtown Winnipeg.
Earlier this year, Mayor Brian Bowman announced the creation of a working group to review CentreVenture Development Corporation’s mandate and report back to Executive Policy Committee.
The working group consulted with over 40 area stakeholders including CentreVenture’s Board of Directors, business groups, residents, developers, planners, agencies, City of Winnipeg Councilors, and City of Winnipeg administration.
“I want to thank Councilor John Orlikow as well as fellow working group members for all the time and effort invested in this review,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “The motion coming forward reaffirms CentreVenture’s mandate, and recognizes that CentreVenture is a key agency in facilitating downtown development and growth.”
In addition to reaffirming CentreVenture’s mandate, the motion also recommends that oversight, accountability and reporting mechanisms be strengthened by including in CentreVenture’s next business plan performance indicators and targets, a regular reporting schedule to Council, and a business case template to better ensure public accountability over public funds. The motion also recommends similar oversight, accountability, and reporting mechanisms be put in place for other agencies receiving City of Winnipeg funding.
“We are extremely pleased with this reaffirmation of our Corporation’s mandate, and are excited about moving forward on new plans and ideas for downtown Winnipeg,” said Angela Mathieson, President and Chief Executive Officer of CentreVenture. “I want to thank Mayor Bowman for his leadership and City staff for their collaboration over the last year.”
Also coming forward for Executive Policy Committee review is an administrative report that makes a series of recommendations aimed at establishing funding support to CentreVenture that allows the organization to fulfill its mandate over the long-term.
“By reaffirming CentreVentre’s mandate, and working with them over the coming year to establish sustainable, long-term funding that allows them to fulfill their mandate, we can continue building a downtown Winnipeg we can all be proud of,” said Mayor Bowman.
Copies of the motion and administrative report are available on the City of Winnipeg’s Decision Management Information System.
