Policy and plans in place to address mosquitoes, other pest insects

Winnipeg, MB - The Winnipeg Public Service today provides an update on insect control programs planned and underway for the 2015 season.

The Public Works department’s primary focus in mosquito control is a 100% biological larviciding program to reduce the emergence of adult mosquitoes. The use of malathion continues to be guided by federal and provincial guidelines and licensing, as well as the Council-approved Insect Control Policy to provide a Health-Canada approved means of reducing adult nuisance mosquitoes.

The City also continues to test more environmentally-sensitive products, to move forward with effective, more sustainable practices.

At the same time, the City understands residents’ right to choose and will respect 90 meter buffer zones, the limit set by Province, and any resident can make application.

And, equally importantly, we all can help fight mosquitoes:

Dump it, Drain it, Cover it, Fill it, Treat it!

Citizens can help in the fight:

  • Dump containers of water
  • Drain eaves troughs and un-used containers
  • Cover rain water barrels
  • Fill in low lying areas
  • Use biological larvicides to treat standing water
