Mayoral Statement on the 100th Anniversary of the War Measures Act

Released: August 22, 2014 at 11:30 a.m.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the War Measures Act and the national unveiling of 100 plaques that recall Canada’s internment operations from 1914 to 1920.

In 1914, tens of thousands of Ukrainian immigrants were required to register with the Canadian government under the War Measures Act. During the First World War, many were obligated to carry identification documents, kept in internment camps, and subjected to heavy labour at work sites.

Today, as we witness the unveiling of the plaques, we honour all those who endured internment camps and ensure we uphold and defend human rights always.

Sincerely,
Mayor Sam Katz
