Holiday season operating hours for City of Winnipeg facilities and services

All civic offices are closed on Wednesday, December 24 at noon, and closed all day on Thursday, December 25, Friday, December 26; and Thursday, January 1.

Recycling & garbage collection

There will be no recycling and garbage collection on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. If your collection day falls on or after the holiday, please put your carts out one day later during these two weeks only. If your collection day normally falls on Thursday, put your carts out on Friday. If your collection day normally falls on Friday, put your carts out on Saturday.

Winnipeg Transit

Winnipeg Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule on Thursday, December 25; Friday, December 26; and Thursday, January 1.

New Year’s Eve service

On Wednesday, December 31, the City and Manitoba Public Insurance are helping Winnipeggers get home safely this by offering free transit after 7 p.m.

The Free Ride program applies to all Winnipeg Transit and Winnipeg Transit Plus service starting December 31 at 7 p.m. until end of service. The last buses leave Downtown at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has sponsored the Free Ride New Year’s Eve service since 2011. As MPI data shows that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of road fatalities, the public auto insurer is committed to reducing related collisions, deaths and injuries through supporting initiatives that offer safe and dependable options to those ringing in the New Year.

Libraries

On Wednesday, December 24, all branches will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.*.

  • *Harvey Smith Library and Osborne Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

All Winnipeg Public Libraries will be closed on Thursday, December 25; Friday, December 26; and Thursday, January 1.

On Wednesday, December 31, all branches will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.*.

Recreation & leisure

Arenas

All arenas are closed Wednesday, December 24, reopening on Friday, January 2, unless otherwise indicated.

Ab McDonald will be open for casual ice rentals from December 27-30. Visit winnipeg.ca/leisureonline to view availability and book. They will also be hosting a free holiday public skate on December 22 and 29 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Enjoy festive tunes, frosty fun, and candy canes for everyone! No pre-registration required.

Cemeteries

Brookside, Transcona, and St. Vital cemeteries will remain open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24 and Thursday, December 25. These cemeteries are otherwise open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Administration Office at Brookside Cemetery will be closed on Wednesday, December 24 at noon, and closed all day on Thursday, December 25, Friday, December 26; and Thursday, January 1.
