Mayor Gillingham Statement on the Passing of Doug Harvey

Mayor Scott Gillingham had the following statement today on the death of community leader, entrepreneur and philanthropist Doug Harvey:

I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Doug Harvey.

Doug was a proud Winnipeg booster and a highly successful business leader who built companies, created jobs and contributed significantly to our city’s economy. But what stands out just as much is what he did with that success. He cared deeply about Winnipeg and showed it through years of generous support for countless non-profit organizations, community boards and major fundraising campaigns.

I was there the night Doug was inducted into the Manitoba Business Hall of Fame, and I remember being struck by his humour and by how often he credited his family and his staff for his success.

I left that evening feeling grateful that Winnipeg had people like Doug Harvey — people who succeed, give back and use their good fortune to help make their community stronger.

On behalf of the City of Winnipeg, I want to extend my sincere condolences to Doug’s family, his friends, his colleagues and everyone whose life he touched.

Winnipeg has lost a great community builder. He will be missed.
