Mayor Scott Gillingham welcomed today’s announcement that the Government of Canada is building a new $267-million medical countermeasures laboratory in Winnipeg.
“This is a major investment in Winnipeg and a strong vote of confidence in the expertise that already exists here,” said Mayor Gillingham. “The new facility will build on our strengths in infectious-disease research, create opportunities for local researchers and highly skilled workers, and help attract further private-sector investment to our city.”
The project will also support the work of the Bioscience Association of Manitoba to grow the province’s life-sciences sector and attract more companies, talent and investment to Winnipeg.
Gillingham also highlighted that the facility’s design and engineering work will be led by a Winnipeg-based firm, Architecture49.
“This is the kind of major federal investment we want to see more of in Winnipeg,” said Gillingham. “Building on our successful partnership through the Housing Accelerator Fund, continued collaboration among all three levels of government will be especially important as we grow our economy, create Canadian jobs and respond to Donald Trump’s ongoing trade aggression."
