Released: November 24, 2022 at 12 p.m.

Mayor Scott Gillingham issued the following statement on the death of Mr. Al Golden, former City Councillor for St. Vital from 1988 to 2000:

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Al Golden, former City Councillor for St. Vital. Al was a passionate voice for the residents of St. Vital and a dedicated public servant who not only served as City Councillor, but also ran for Mayor on three occasions.

“In addition to his time on City Council, Al played a key role in the revitalization of the Exchange District and the development of Old Market Square. He owned several local businesses including the St. Vital Hotel and Transcona Country Club, and he operated the non-profit Golden Retriever Seniors Transportation Service.

“I had the opportunity to speak with Al’s son Michael earlier today, and expressed sincere condolences on behalf of City Council and the entire civic government.”

Flags at City Hall and Portage and Main will be lowered to half-mast until December 3, 2022.
