Warmer weather means it’s time to start thinking about yard work. Whether you own or rent a property, there are a few things to keep in mind when cutting the grass, weeding, and landscaping.
Grass length
Make sure to keep grass no longer than 15 cm (6 inches). This rule doesn’t apply to ornamental grasses often used in planters and landscaping.
Under the Neighbourhood Liveability By-law, you also need to control any noxious weeds. This means removing them, cutting them, or applying treatment to them.
“Unsightly yards are one of the top issues our team deals with,” said Winston Yee, Manager of Licensing & By-law Enforcement. “Long grass, weeds, and other unkept vegetation contribute to urban blight, and can also become a fire hazard.”
Boulevard landscaping
You can plant, landscape, or decorate the boulevard in front of your home. You still need to follow the same rules for grass length and noxious-weed control.
Check the guidelines for boulevard decorating before coming up with your landscaping plan.
Trees & shrubs
If you’re preparing to plant new trees or shrubs, make sure they will fit the space first. This means they won’t block the street or sidewalk as they grow. You also need to ensure their roots won’t interfere with sewer or water lines.
Always call or click before you dig on your property.
Yard waste collection
Remember to only place yard waste in acceptable containers. You can check your collection day if you forget it.
