A new, state-of-the-art bus garage is coming to northwest Winnipeg.
Ground has been broken and final plans unveiled for the $200M Oak Point Garage. This is our highest priority infrastructure project and a groundbreaking initiative for our city.
Thinking green
We designed Oak Point Garage with sustainability in mind.
This net-zero carbon facility will be LEED Silver certified. It will also include a bus loop for future routes and have an active transportation path.
Oak Point Garage will help us in our continuing transition to a greener fleet. When it opens, there will be 90 zero-emission buses in our fleet. The garage will have chargers and dispensers for 24 battery-electric buses. There is also room for future zero-emission expansion.
Building for the future
Currently, we operate a fleet of more than 600 buses from three garages:
- Fort Rouge Garage (421 Osborne St.)
- Brandon Garage (600 Brandon Ave.)
- North Garage (1520 Main St.)
Once completed in 2027, Oak Point Garage will replace our aging North Garage. That is our oldest facility and undersized for our current and future needs.
At 259,000 sq. ft., Oak Point Garage will be the second Transit garage with the capacity to store and maintain 60-foot buses. The other facility with that capability is Brandon Garage. In total, the new garage will have a maximum storage capacity for 171 forty-foot buses.
Why northwest Winnipeg?
There are many reasons Oak Point Highway is ideal for a transit garage.
The northwest Winnipeg location was the only available land large enough to accommodate a full-scale transit garage. It also provides these important amenities:
- Access to a major transportation route
- Proximity to Red River College Polytechnic
- Commercial and industrial setting
- Access to the signalized intersection at Selkirk Avenue
- Adjacency to future high-frequency transit routes
Postal code data from 2021 indicated that approximately 25% of bus operators live in the area as well.
