Remember to thank Transit staff today and throughout the year by being kind and courteous on buses

While March 18 is Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day, we're proud to celebrate our wonderful staff every day. They're truly dedicated to helping Winnipeggers get to where they need to go.

“Everyone at Winnipeg Transit has an important role to play,” said Greg Ewankiw, Director of Winnipeg Transit. "Our staff are united by one common goal: to provide the best possible transit service."

They’re operators helping passengers navigate their first trip with us. They’re mechanics repairing and maintaining our fleet of more than 600 buses. They’re transit planners making seasonal route changes. They’re maintenance workers helping keep shelters clean and usable. They’re office staff managing finances, hiring operators, improving accessibility, overseeing Transit Plus, and all the other behind the scenes jobs.

It takes all of them to keep Winnipeg Transit running smoothly.

Serving Winnipeggers since 1882

Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day marks the anniversary of the first-ever transit service. That, more than 350 years ago in France, was in the form of horse-drawn carriage.

Horses were also the first form of public transportation in the city. In 1882, the Winnipeg Street Railway Company offered horsecar trips along Main Street from City Hall to Broadway.

Over the next 140-plus years, we have adapted with the times to connect residents with their city. From horsecars and electric streetcars, trolleybuses and gas-powered buses, and now zero-emission buses, we have continued to evolve with the times.

Take a trip down memory lane by checking out the Winnipeg Transit Photo Collection. We've recently made nearly 600 of the collection’s photos available on Winnipeg in Focus, the City Archive’s online database.
