An exciting new way to preview trips is now available to help Winnipeggers get ready for the launch of the Primary Transit Network.
Thanks to a partnership with the Transit app, a 'Winnipeg Transit preview mode' is now available on the popular navigation app, already used by many Winnipeggers.
Winnipeg Transit has partnered with the Transit app for one year to give passengers another tool to help with the network transition. Other exciting features will roll out soon on the Transit app as part of the partnership. These features are:
- The ability for riders to see detoured routes in the app in real-time, thanks to Transit’s automatic detour detection technology
- Trip planning that integrates On-Request service
How to access the Transit app preview mode
To access the Transit app preview mode, simply download the app from transitapp.com.
You’ll see a ‘Winnipeg Transit preview mode’ message at the bottom of the home screen. You can also plan a trip as usual, and below your present-day routing, you’ll see what your route will look like after the launch of the Primary Transit Network.
People can still use winnipegtransit.com and Navigo to plan trips. The goal of the partnership is to give passengers options, so they can choose the tool that works best for them.
Automatic detour detection coming soon
Winnipeg Transit currently lets bus users know about detours via its Service Alerts. These alerts require manual input, which can sometimes lead to delays, and are available only in text format.
But soon, the Transit app will begin displaying bus detours directly on each route’s map, thanks to technology that allows the app to detect bus detours in Winnipeg automatically. If a bus stops along the detour, the Transit app will detect where and display temporary stop locations on the map, as well. All of this information – the shape of the detour, where the bus stops – will be shared with passengers using the Transit app to look up bus times and plan trips.
During our partnership, the Transit app will also integrate On-Request service into trip planning. The number of On-Request service zones will triple on June 29. Passengers traveling in these areas will be able to plan trips in the Transit app that include On-Request service, and will be linked directly to the On-Request app to complete their ride.
