How Giveaway Weekend works
Giveaway Weekend is when you can leave things you no longer want on the curb. One weekend takes place in May and the other in September.
If you plan to take part, make sure to label unwanted items as 'free'. Remember to bring in any items left on the curb by Sunday evening.
If you are checking out the curbs for treasures to you, please only take items labeled 'free'.
By passing along reusable items you no longer need, your clean-up makes a big impact. If you are looking to declutter, getting started may be easier than you think.
Start small and go room by room
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to happen all at once. Break it down by choosing one room, or even one drawer, and build from there.
As you go, sort items into simple categories like keep, donate, recycle, and give away. If something is still usable, consider setting it aside for Giveaway Weekend, so it can find a new home.

One thing that should never go in the garbage or recycling bins are lithium batteries. They can cause fires that are especially dangerous because they can last a long time and are hard to put out. The safest way to get rid of items with lithium ion batteries is to take them to a 4R Winnipeg Depot.
Don’t forget the appliances and hazardous products
If you have old electronics and unused appliances piling up, we'll take them at our 4R Depots.
You can also safely dispose of other household hazardous waste there at no charge. The 4R Depots accept items like cleaners, pest and weed killers, paint, used oil, and gasoline. Batteries, except those for EVs, are also accepted.
You can even bring gently used clothing to donate in the textile donation bins on site.
Donate thoughtfully
Tidying up isn’t just about making space in your home. If you have items left over after Giveaway Weekend, consider donating them and helping the community.
“This seasonal shift is a perfect time to donate and keep the cycle of giving going strong,” said Alex Grislis, an Environmental Planner with us. “Winnipeg has many donation centres ready to give your pre-loved items a second life.”

Don’t leave the items by the door
Book a specific day to finish the job, like a Saturday morning donation drop-off or a 4R Depot run. A set date turns spring cleaning from mostly done into done.
