Les frais d’adoption sont réduits alors que le nombre de chiens continue d’augmenter aux Services aux animaux de Winnipeg

Adoptions, foster homes, and community support urgently needed

Adoptable dog named Tangela
Tangela is one of the dogs currently available for adoption at Winnipeg Animal Services

The number of dogs in care at Winnipeg Animal Services has swelled and kennels are filling up fast. If you are able, now is the time to adopt or foster to help these dogs find their forever home.

To encourage adoptions, we are holding an adoption fee promotion. Until Friday, July 4, the fee to adopt a dog has been reduced from $330 to $175. Every adoption includes spay/neuter surgery, first vaccinations, tattoo, microchip, and first license.

“We are desperate for support right now,” said Jennifer Medlicott, Community Relations Coordinator of Winnipeg Animal Services.

“We need more families to open their homes, either through adoption or even short-term fostering. Our team is ready to help you find the right match.”

Every adoption not only gives a dog a second chance, it also frees up much-needed space and resources to help more animals in need.

Things to consider before adopting a dog

Pets provide great companionship, and we owe it to them to provide the best home possible. It’s important to remember that adopting a dog is a long-term commitment and life is full of surprises. Before you adopt, carefully consider whether you can still provide care if your situation changes.

You should also review your finances and ensure you are able to afford food, licensing, and vet care throughout your dog’s life.

While each dog is different, they all need physical activity to live a long, happy life. Take the time to think about how often and where you will be able to exercise your dog.

If having a dog is right for you and your family, visit us at 1057 Logan Ave. to meet our dogs and see if one is the right fit for you.

Adoptions are done in person, Monday to Friday from noon until 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. Animal Services will be closed on July 1 for Canada Day. The adoption process usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour.

If you’re not ready to adopt but would like to volunteer to foster, please contact 311.

How current dog owners can help

All pet owners can help keep animals out of the shelter by making sure their pets are properly licensed. Licensing is the fastest way to reunite lost pets with their families. It allows our staff to return animals home directly from the field, rather than bringing them into the facility.

Our team really wants to keep families together.

Please also remember to keep your pets safe and secure on your property at all times.

Whether you’re looking to adopt, foster, or simply ensure your pet is licensed and secure, every action helps. For more information on available dogs, fostering, or licensing, visit winnipeg.ca/animalservices.

Let’s rally together and give these dogs the homes—and second chances—they deserve.
