While the focus at Winnipeg Animal Services is usually on our furry, four-legged friends, things have been a little more feathered lately.
Our officers recently responded to a call that brought more than 40 birds into our care. We are happy to report many of the birds are now ready for their new homes.
Adopting a bird
We have many feathered friends ready for their forever flock. Browse our Petfinder page to learn about who’s who and what needs they may have. Remember to check back often - we will be adding more birds as they become available. The birds currently in our care include:
- Budgies
- Cockatiels
- Canaries
- Finches
- Lovebirds
- Cinnamon Red-Rumped Parrots
If you’re ready to meet a bird in person, please visit us at 1057 Logan Ave. and let us know who you’re interested in. We ask that you show us a photo of your proposed set-up for the birds, to ensure they have what they need. Cockatiels, parrots, and lovebirds must be adopted in pairs.
Adoptions are done in person, Monday through Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m. The adoption process usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour.
The Council-approved adoption fee for exotic animals, including birds, is $176 plus GST.
Other ways to help
Our compassionate staff is busy caring for the birds and more than 25 dogs, which means our attention is spread a little thinner than usual.
You can still help, even If birds aren’t your thing:
- Try out a “doggie date.” You can take a dog out for a day, overnight, or up to one week. This gives the dog a break and helps our team.
- Consider adopting a dog. Each dog adopted frees up space and staff time so we can care for the birds.
Thanks to the generosity of the community, we currently have enough donations of bird cages and supplies,
Things to consider before adopting a pet
Pets provide great companionship, and we owe it to them to provide the best home possible. Before you adopt:
- Carefully consider whether you can provide care, even if your situation changes
- Review your finances and ensure you are able to afford food, enrichment, and vet care
- Plan for daily enrichment and interaction so your pet can thrive
Thank you, Winnipeg
Every bit of kindness helps, whether it’s donating supplies, going on a “doggie date,” adopting, sharing our updates, or cheering on our dedicated team.
