Are you looking for a little furry companionship this holiday season? Winnipeg Animal Services has many dogs in care waiting for their new best friend. Giving them a warm place to stay and experience the holidays is just one way you can help give back to the community.
“Because of reduced hours, our dogs don’t get to see staff as much over the holidays,” said Jennifer Medlicott, Community Relations Coordinator at Winnipeg Animal Services.
We want to find them a home for the holidays that can give them the love they deserve.
If you’re planning on having a quiet holiday, taking care of a dog might be the perfect option for you.
Adoption
There are so many amazing dogs eagerly waiting for a family to love them. Our holiday wish is to see these dogs out of the shelter and into a loving home.
Each dog has a personality that shines even brighter when leaving the shelter. You could be the reason they finally find a permanent home.

This year, in addition to dogs, we unexpectedly brought many birds into our care. Adopting a dog helps to give extra space for all our furry and flying visitors.

If you can’t adopt right now
A Doggie Date is the perfect chance to give some extra love and is less of a commitment. So, if your holiday gatherings are keeping you home, consider having a Doggie Date.
You can take one of the dogs out for a day or up to a week. During your time together, their collar, leash, and pet food are provided.
“When the dogs get back from their dates, they’ve got more energy in them,” said Medlicott.
You can see how much it helps them to spend time away from the shelter.
Exploring the city with your Doggie Date also helps them meet new people and gain social skills. The dogs wear colourful “adopt me” vests, so everyone can see they are available for adoption.
Taking the dog outside improves your own health and wellness, and some dogs find their forever home because of these trips.
Your kindness and hospitality keep dogs out of the shelter for the holidays.
Consider this before you adopt
Pets shouldn’t be an unexpected gift. Remember to talk to all members of your household and carefully consider the long-term commitment of being a pet owner before you decide to bring home a new furry friend.
Taking care of a pet can have some unexpected expenses. Before you adopt, think about whether you could provide for a pet financially.
You’ll also want to be sure you can give your pet the physical activity it needs. Some animals need more exercise than others, so having a backyard or nearby park is a good place to start.
