Multi-faceted plan proposed to support Winnipeg residents and businesses
Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is proposing a two-year COVID-19 Economic Response and Recovery Plan for consideration by Council with the tools to guide prioritization of strategies and actions, based on OurWinnipeg principles, to promote job and economic growth, equity and resiliency.
The proposed strategies meant to assist both residents and businesses include:
- Taxation changes and tax-supported measures;
- Infrastructure investment;
- Policy review;
- Service delivery adaptations; and,
- Collaboration and advocacy efforts with key community stakeholders.
“Many sectors of our economy and all residents in Winnipeg have felt the varying impacts of COVID-19,” said Councillor John Orlikow, River Heights – Fort Garry. “The City has taken steps to alleviate some of the challenges of the pandemic, but it’s time to plot a course for our collective recovery. This plan has been developed with the help of a number of local partners and we look forward to collaborating with them on the implementation of these important measures.”
“We have developed a robust plan that we believe will greatly assist Council in helping our local economy recover from the impacts of the pandemic,” said Catherine Kloepfer, City of Winnipeg Chief Financial Officer. “I’d like to offer my thanks and appreciation to the community partners and members of Council that have provided their input during the development of this plan. We look forward to the upcoming committee discussions that will help formalize the final version of the plan.”
The COVID-19 Economic Response and Recovery Plan will be presented at the City’s five community committee meetings, scheduled from October 25 - November 1, 2021. Following review at community committee meetings, the plan will be presented for consideration at Executive Policy Committee on November 17, 2021.
