Winnipeg, MB – Mayor Brian Bowman announced the annual call for applications today as the Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership is now available for applicants. Grade twelve students from across Winnipeg are encouraged to apply for an opportunity to receive a $1,000 scholarship.

“Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to meet so many young leaders in our community,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “The Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership has been a great way to recognize young leaders and each year, it has helped encourage a new group of leaders to make our community a better place to be. This year, the Mayor’s Scholarship is continuing to support young leaders on the path towards their educational and career goals.”

In 2016, the Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership was introduced as a way to recognize and support students who have demonstrated consistent and outstanding dedication to solving a community problem or making their community a better place to live. Through both of his terms in office, Mayor Bowman has been focused on engaging the next generation of leaders through initiatives like the creation of a Youth Advisory Council, Kid Mayor, the Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership, and speaking at all of Winnipeg’s high schools.

Applicants can demonstrate community leadership through activities that promote racial and social inclusion, drive reconciliation, encourage environmental stewardship, and support or empower Winnipeg’s less fortunate.

Scholarship applicants must complete and submit an application form. The application form, as well as application criteria, can be found on the Mayor’s website. Only application forms completed in full will be considered. The Winnipeg Foundation manages the fund for the Mayor’s Scholarship including issuing scholarship cheques and tax receipts, as required. The Mayor’s Office manages application intake, and award recipients are selected by an independent selection panel.

Applications must be received by May 21, 2021. For more information on the Mayor’s Scholarship, visit: https://www.mayorbowman.ca/applications/mayors-scholarship

Last year’s scholarship winners were:

  • Kyla Abdullah – Transcona Collegiate
  • Joshua Bond – Westwood Collegiate
  • Gabrielle David - Collège Garden City Collegiate
  • Madlin Murad – Grand Park High School
  • Shubneet Thind – Mile Macdonell Collegiate

“Like last year, I hope this scholarship will help make a different kind of school year a little brighter for the five winners and remind all Winnipeggers that our future is bright,” said Mayor Bowman.
