Winnipeg, MB. - As part of its design, the Southwest Rapid Transitway Stage 2 will integrate public artwork celebrating civic, Indigenous and Métis history as well as the natural history and ecology of the Fort Garry region, the north-south trails, and the fur trade.
Seven locations along the Southwest Rapid Transitway will host artwork including: Parker, McGillivray, Clarence, Chevrier, Plaza, Chancellor, and Markham sections of the development.
Specific themes have been developed to celebrate the heritage and unique character of each region:
- Rooster Town Métis community,
- History of public transportation in Winnipeg
- Industrial and neighbourhood development in Fort Garry
- Natural history of the Red River region
- Japanese- Canadian internment in Manitoba
- North-South trails
- Métis resistance and land rights
A national call to artists was issued today by the Winnipeg Arts Council, who manages the Public Art Policy and Program on behalf of the City of Winnipeg. The call is open to professional artists residing in Canada.
Selected artists will work with a public art committee, made up of representatives from the Winnipeg Arts Council, Plenary Roads Winnipeg, and the City of Winnipeg. They will also work with the project team to integrate their artwork with the transitway.
Deadline for submission is Friday, March 31, 2017.
