Winnipeg, MB - Winnipeg Public Library will be holding public open houses to share preliminary design plans for the new Transcona Library. The new Library, replacing the existing Library at 111 Victoria Avenue West, will be located on the corner of Transcona Boulevard and Plessis Road.

There will be two opportunities for the public to learn more about the project and to provide feedback on the plans:

Preliminary design plans for the new library will be available at both public open houses. Cibinel Architecture Inc., City of Winnipeg, and Library staff will be on-hand to answer questions about the project. Comment forms will be available for public feedback.

All are welcome to attend. If you cannot attend, please view the designs and send in your feedback online at winnipeg.ca/library from October 29 to November 16, 2015.

Background
A new Transcona Library was identified as a priority in the Library Redevelopment Strategy. The existing Transcona Library was built in 1961, expanded in 1975, and is a 7,600 square foot two-level building with limited parking. The library circulated approximately 178,000 items and offered 165 free programs and workshops in 2014.

To better meet the needs of the community, the new Library will be a one-floor, fully accessible space with more parking and an outdoor reading area. Proposed plans include a multi-purpose programming room, two tutorial rooms, and space for a collection of approximately 40,000 items. There will be improved study and leisure areas, as well as an indoor Family Literacy playground. The new Library will be approximately 13,500 square feet. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2016, with an anticipated completion date of spring 2017.

In December 2011, Council directed the Public Service to develop a plan for library redevelopment. This long-term Library Redevelopment Strategy was presented to the Standing Policy Committee on Protection and Community Services on July 5, 2012 and was approved as part of the Capital Budget in January 2013.
