Winnipeg, MB - At a ceremony today, Matt Wiebe, MLA for Concordia, on behalf of the Honourable Drew Caldwell, Minister of Municipal Government, along with Mayor Brian Bowman officially celebrated the grand opening of the East Elmwood Community Centre redevelopment project. The previous East Elmwood Community Centre was lost due to fire, and its absence was felt by youth and families alike.
The redeveloped community centre features a regulation-sized gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, kitchen, dressing rooms and an outdoor rink. The new centre also includes many environmentally-friendly initiatives such as low-flow plumbing, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and parking spaces for 21 bicycles.
“The impact of the fire that destroyed the East Elmwood Community Centre in 2011 was felt by the entire community," said Minister Caldwell. "By consulting with the local residents and stakeholders in the rebuilding process, I feel the new facility is better than ever and will continue to thrive in this vibrant neighbourhood.”
“I am proud that the community was very involved in bringing this project back to life, and pleased that City of Winnipeg contributed to this significant investment that will meet the need for recreation and cultural programming in the neighborhood,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Today is a special day - the new East Elmwood Community Centre is ready for Winnipeggers of all ages and abilities to enjoy and make new memories.”
“We are fortunate to be entering a new chapter of East Elmwood Community Centre history. Untold hours of volunteer time have gone into the planning of the new centre at 490 Keenleyside Street, which we know will have a very positive impact on the community,” said Amanda Young, East Elmwood Steering Committee member. “The new building, with its full size gym, kitchen and new multi-purpose room will offer services and programs that we couldn't offer previously.”
The redevelopment of the East Elmwood Community Centre, officially announced in January 2013, was a $5.2 million joint funding partnership between the Province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg.
