Winnipeg, MB – Staff in select City of Winnipeg facilities can now administer Naloxone in response to suspected opioid overdoses, as part of their first aid procedures.
Naloxone is a fast-acting drug that can temporarily reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, and restore breathing within two to five minutes. Naloxone is safe for all ages, and only works if you have opioids — such as fentanyl, heroin, morphine, or codeine — in your system.
“Opioids continue to be a significant public health concern and increasing access to naloxone will save lives,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
Staff in the following City facilities can now administer nasal spray Naloxone while waiting for emergency services to respond:
City-run indoor arenas, and community centre facilities, which are not managed by the City, are not included in this initiative. Bourkevale Lawn Bowling, which is not staffed, is also not included.
Naloxone kits are not available for pickup at these locations. Free take-home kits are available at Manitoba Take Home Naloxone Distribution Program sites.
