Winnipeg, MB – In an effort to provide greater access to food waste collection programs in Winnipeg and help reduce the amount of food waste entering our landfills, the City of Winnipeg is launching a Compost Support Program.
As part of the program, organizations that collect and transport food waste to a licensed compost facility are eligible to apply for support payments up to a maximum of $65,000 in cash and in-kind advertising credits.
“Advancing waste reduction and diversion initiatives is of critical importance to our environment,” said Councillor Brian Mayes, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Water and Waste, Riverbank Management and the Environment. “Through the Compost Support Program, more Winnipeggers will have access to food waste collection services, helping us reduce the amount of food waste entering our landfills while encouraging composting.”
The successful applicants must use the funding to help provide greater access to food waste collection programs in Winnipeg. Some ways to do this include:
- Providing a subsidy for low-income residents who wish to participate in compost collection but are financially unable to
- Assisting in developing new programs for residents whose dwellings do not currently qualify for compost programs (e.g. Multi-family)
- Implementing measures to offset costs of their program for the benefit of Winnipeg residents
Applications for support payments are being accepted online until April 30, 2022.
