Winnipeg, MB – Today, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) released the results of a workplace culture survey, undertaken to better understand how its staff feels about their workplace and the department’s culture.

Workplace culture describes the formal and informal workplace environment, including how employees feel at work, and how they communicate with each other, engage in teamwork, and solve problems.

Survey results indicate that across all genders, racial backgrounds, and work units, WFPS staff want to work in a positive, constructive workplace that supports their needs for growth and connection; however, staff currently operate in a passive/defensive environment characterized by cautious work interactions designed to protect their own security.

The survey results will be used to help inform next steps for the WFPS, including contracting with a consulting firm to produce a gap analysis to identify the steps needed to improve the workplace, and a culture shift plan to implement the needed changes.

To date, the WFPS has already undertaken a number of measures to improve the workplace for all employees, including:

  • Resolving outstanding respectful workplace complaints.
  • Improving respectful workplace policies, as well as investigation and restorative resolution processes.
  • Rolling out anti-racism, respectful workplace and conflict resolution training to staff.
  • Launching the Diversity & Equity Firefighters Training program to increase representation over time and help reduce barriers for equity seeking groups, including individuals who identify as a woman, 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit), a person with a disability, or as a racialized person.
  • Incorporating gender-inclusive renovations into capital planning at the station-level
  • Increasing staff communications and engagement opportunities, including conducting bi-weekly station and facility visits so that WFPS Executive Leaders can hear directly from staff
