Second phase of pilot project includes redesigned parking guides and new regulatory signs in the Exchange District
Winnipeg, MB – Drivers in the Exchange District will notice new parking signage starting this week, as the City of Winnipeg begins the second phase of a pilot project to help improve signage readability and reduce confusion around on-street parking.
“The Public Service has worked hard to adapt public feedback into clearer and more convenient parking signage as viewed from both street and sidewalk,” said Matt Allard, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “These signs will help us continue to seek a balance between traffic flow and destination parking in the Exchange District.”
“Businesses have told us confusing parking signage remains one of the barriers for visitors to the Exchange District,” said Vivian Santos, Councillor for Point Douglas. “We’re looking forward to hearing what visitors think of these new signs, and are hopeful they will encourage even more people to enjoy the world class shops, restaurants, and businesses in the neighbourhood”
The sidewalk-facing parking guides feature a colour-coded timetable that is intended to be read after parking your vehicle, to confirm you’ve done so correctly. Based on feedback from the pilot’s first phase, the guides have been redesigned with clearer layouts, text, and graphics.
The City is also piloting new street-facing regulatory signs during this phase of the project. These signs have been redesigned with bolder colours and simpler icons to help drivers identify available spaces from their vehicle. The new designs also consolidate multiple regulations into one sign where possible.

Right: New regulatory signs.The City is asking for public feedback through an online survey until March 21, 2022 to better understand the issues Winnipeggers face with parking signs, and whether the new signage is an improvement for those visiting the pilot area. Feedback will help the City determine if new signage should be adopted permanently, across other areas.
