Winnipeg, MB – At 11 p.m. on Sunday, August 15, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire at a two-storey house in the 300 block of Wardlaw Avenue.
When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the house, extending to an adjacent commercial structure located in the 100 block of Scott Street.
Crews launched a defensive attack until it was safe to enter both buildings to fight the fire. Challenging heat conditions, including high air temperatures and high humidity resulted in more frequent crew rotations. The fire was declared under control at 1 a.m.
There were two occupants in the house at the time of the fire. One self-evacuated and was transported to hospital in stable condition by on-scene paramedics. The other was located inside the house by firefighters and then transported to hospital in critical condition. One firefighter was assessed on-scene by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. While no damage estimates are available, both the house and commercial structure suffered extensive fire, smoke, and water damage.
