Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a house fire and a gas leak.
Langevin Street Fire
At 11:02 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a home in the 500 block of Langevin Street.
When crews arrived on scene, they launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 11:22 p.m.
All occupants safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team assisted displaced residents in finding alternative accommodations until the home is safe for re-occupancy.
No damage estimates are available. Initial observations suggest the cause of the fire is accidental and related to the home’s gas stove. Gas-fired appliances require a higher level of diligence. Residents are reminded to have their gas ranges services by a qualified technician in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Gas Leak on Smith Street
At 10:29 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a gas leak near 185 Smith Street. When crews arrived on scene, they encountered a gas line damaged during construction. Natural gas was venting into the air.
WFPS deployed a hazardous material response team and evacuated one nearby building under construction. WFPS crews monitored gas readings in other nearby buildings to ensure gas had not spread to other buildings through ventilation systems.
Other WFPS crews and members of the Winnipeg Police Service managed traffic and kept the surrounding area clear of any combustible hazards.
Manitoba Hydro responded to repair the gas line. In the meantime, the gas supply has been shut down and the situation was declared under control at 11:58 a.m. No injuries were reported. Traffic access will be re-opened in the area as crews depart the scene.
